<VV> Smitty’s Eulogy

With John’s permission, here is his eulogy to Smitty:


A True Legend 

 

Hubert (Smitty) Smith is someone who has meant so much to the Tidewater Corvair Club. The members, past and present, who had the privilege of knowing Smitty have hearts full of gratitude, respect, and admiration.

 

For over forty years, Smitty was not just a member of this club, he was the heart of it. From the early days of weekend meet-ups, to the biggest car shows, Smitty was always there – sleeves rolled up, smile on his face, and a story to share about the beauty and soul of every machine on wheels. But he would quickly pronounce that Early Corvairs were his favorite.

 

He had a way of turning wrenches into wisdom and Corvairs into race cars. In hisseventies, he created a formidable race car “Spike” from the collection at Paul’s Farm. He completed many laps at multiple tracks and astonished prominent racers. When something broke, he did not just fix the car – he fixed our spirits. He taught us patience, pride in our work, and most of all, the joy of sharing our passion with others.

 

Beyond the engines, chrome, and open roads, what truly made Smitty special was the kindness and connection he brought to the Corvair community. He made newcomers feel at home and turned acquaintances into friends.

 

It is impossible to measure the miles Smitty has traveled – not just behind the wheel, but in the lives he touched. His laughter, generosity, and enthusiasm have left the tire tracks across all our hearts. 

 

Though we will miss Smitty at every gathering, every cruise, and every rev of the engine, his spirit rides with us still. Every time we hear an engine roar, every time we polish a fender to perfection, every time we share a story that starts with “Smitty says…”, we’ll know he is right there with us – smiling,nodding, and probably offering a bit of advice.

 

Thank you Smitty, for everything - for your dedication, your heart, and your friendship. You may have taken your final drive on earth, but your legacy will forever be part of the journey we share.
