I would bet that the base metal, not the weld, was the weak link in the
failure.
Plenty of welded clutch discs have survived unknown "abuse" ... perhaps
made of quality steel alloy base for the friction disc. . . typically, a
quality weld will hold while the surrounding metals are destroyed.
