Hi Jeff,

As you have a '63, if it turns out you really need a diff I'd do some checking around the used market - there were many Corvairs parted out and the early transmission was less desirable so you still have a decent chance of finding a fairly low mileage complete transaxle.  Rather than doing a rebuild, you could simply replace the seals and have your car back on the road.

Before doing any of that, I'd consider pulling the power pack and doing some further diagnosis.  While it does sound like a spider gear failure there are enough other potential things (as Frank mentioned, could be just a bad axle yoke) that investigating first is probably time well spent.
