 Yes a good lube needed , but most times real issue is the main frame bushing wear. We used a silicone based lube .There was a factory procedure for repairing that. A ticklish job  using a special fixture  and tools . I went to GM school in 67 for Speedos , tachometers , and Cruise controls. I think I still have a complete setup upstairs in my shop. I used to enjoy that kind of work , but no more.   I guess todays permanent  fix is to convert to electronic?.
