They could Roy, but generally the preference has been for distinct 
routes, and there are choices that can be made with regard to roads 
which are more suited to each event.

The real reason for dropping the Econorun from the 2012 plans is not 
related to routing, however, it is related to time.  A 
widely-expressed desire prior to the planning for this convention was 
that it be shortened by a day.  Shoehorning both the rally and the 
econo-run into a single day shortchanges both events.

Since neither event is a hard-and-fast requirement, the decision was 
made to drop the econo-run and let the rally benefit from the freed time.

As you might guess from my earlier reply to Jason, it was a decision 
that I greeted with enthusiasm.
