[FC] Stupid fan....

Hi all!

Finally got the fan to come off. I followed Bording's suggestion to wirewheel
the joint where the fan meets the hub. Wouldn't budge. I took a sharpened
scribe and scratched away at the joint until I could see only bare magnesium
and steel. Shot some more weasel pee all over it and let it sit. Still
wouldn't budge. Well, new (used) fan from CU is only $20 measly bucks or so, I
figured I would let loose and see just how much abuse a mag fan can take. A
fair bit actually.... I smacked the hub area in between the blades several
times (no budge) then moved on to several smacks on the rim at each blade
joint. I I mean smacks, not just taps! Round and round just three times and
wudda ya know? It just plain fell off. Closer examination showed that the
weasel pee had worked its way through and across the face of the hub/back of
fan, and that it was only corrosion of the steel/magnesium interface that held
the sucker together. My guess is that it has welded together from galvanic
reaction, aided by its long life living near the ocean and being stored in
less than perfect environment.
Conclusion: perhaps I should send it to the CPF as an example of how mag fans
can grow barnacles.....
I will be sending the pics off to Les to post on the WCC website soon.
