Hi Paul:

I think that you might have a ground problem. First I
would try to wedge something down on the brake pedal
and see if you have 12volts going to the switch. IF
you dont then you need to follow those two wires back
to the fuse block. If you have the 12 then I would
check the voltage at the brake lights in the back, you
should have 12 there and it could be a bad ground.
Just remember 40 years rust could be a problem. Just
take your time. 
If not somewere between the switch and the back lights
there is a break. You might want to check the rear
wire harness for that break in the line.
