If someone tries to start the car while another person is trying to turn the 
crankshaft, that person is going to get badly hurt if the starter spins the 
engine.  A broken arm at the least, or even death is a possibility.  Never 
have anyone engage the starter under this circumstance.  Many people have 
been maimed or killed by bad advise and this is a classic example of bad

  Next time that happens, turn the engine with a socket or L handle or box
  wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt a few degrees and try again. If it
  engages, you are missing some teeth. (especially if someone hits the

  when you are trying to wrench the engine!). We had a 65 Ford Fairlane 2

  289 cruisomatic... loved that car!!!! that occasionally would not catch. A
  quick twist of the fan usually turned the engine far enough for the 
starter
