Hello,
While we are on battery's.  I am working on a 61
truck.  I have installed a late model engine with an
alternator.  I have a late model wiring harness and late model
voltage regulator.  The battery always goes dead.  The only way
I can solve the problem is I disconnect the battery cable to the positive
terminal when the truck is not being driven  This solves the problem
but does not correct it.  Any ideas on what might be causing it?

Well, you are mostly correct JR. The battery in question is a group 51
