if you coil up about 16 inches of that wire and tape it , you should  get 
rid of that syndrome. otherwise it will take off ok after a quick run up to  
@1600 rpm.
on my coupe , i put in a heavy duty "plastic/ resin thingy "tie post near  
where a late would have it to tie my extra power leads to the front. i ran 
the  red wire to this from the alt reg terminal. this took care of that. i 
found some  nice heavy duty tie posts on modern GM cars in the junkyard , that 
are perfect  for corvair B plus tie points. they mount with a screw tab , 
and have a number  12 screw post that is strong.
i am running 100 amp alternators on mine for all the extra loads i have.  
the truck has had this setup for many years now working great. extra 
headlight  option (12 volt aircraft landing lites in hi beam , ham radios and heated 
seats  )  do fine.  i put a voltmeter in my spyder dash in place of head  
temp. mini motometer in place of boost gauge.

enough  volt drop and won't charge at lower rpms. I used the two now unused 
wires in  the old regulator harness jumped them where the reg was and 
connected one to  the #1lead on the connector and the other to the main alt post. 
Now there is  enough of a drop for the alt to sense and once the engine 
starts I don't get  the gen light coming on.
