The saga of the red "Gen" light progresses. I have purchased a voltmeter tester and am running through the steps in the shop manual. On Page 6Y7 I checked the voltage output of the alternator as in Fig 6c and the meter read 12.8 volts and climbing to 14.5 with rpm increase. This a freshly rebuilt alternator from one of my favorite vendors, and was pretty certain it was OK even prior to this check. Nice to have confirmation On pgs 6Y8-9 they prescribe a circuit resistance test. with the meter connected as figure 9c, and the engine off with the ignition switch in the "on" position, the red dash light went out, but, oddly, the red "PRESS" light came on instead. I performed the field relay test on page 9 figure 10-C I read 1.7 volts at fast idle. this is within the specs according to shop manual. When running, the red "gen" light still stays on at all times regardless of engine speed, My new dash Voltmeter I installed reads about 12.5 volts with no accessories on, however if headlights are turned on the needle drops to 9 volts and will not rise from there.I removed the transaxle cover and inspected the front wiring harness as it passes out of the engine compartment and over the rear axle. I unwrapped the wiring and inspected, then re- wrapped the harness, finding no cracks or shorts to ground. I was surprised that the wiring itself is in such good shape after 50 years. The manual states that this alternator is capable of producing 37 amps of juice but the voltmeter tester I bought is limited to measurements of 10 amps or less, so I cannot measure the amperage coming form the voltage regulator. I havea neighbor who may be able to help me with this device and he is looking into borrowing one to see how much amperage is leaving the voltage regulator and ghoing into the battery.I suspect that the culprit may be the voltage regulator, but this one is new also from when i replaced the alternator. As long as i had the transaxle cover off I fabbed up a bracket to support the heater blower housing and so from now on I will be able to remove the transaxle cover without disturbing the blower housing. One of the studs for the housing mounting was rusted badly and ruined anyway. After doing the brakes on my 10 year old Mustang last week, it was nice to be able to leave the metric tools in the toolbox!Did every one have a Merry Christmas? Tim werner '61 rampy 140 4- spd.
