[FC] front accelerator linkage

i have found that if everything is free , and you have the stronger 140  
secondary springs in your carbs with a stock return spring in correct  
position , no front spring is needed, unless maybe there is play in your  linkages .
the areas that need attention on an early (61-63 ) style front linkage are  
the shaft thru the floor washer, a thick felt washer that must be very free 
to  float around in the hole retainer, and the cable end under the shield. 
i   lube the washer and shaft with a spray silicone , or "fluid film" a rust 
 proofing spray of thinned cosmoline.       I   just fixed a nice 63 
greenbrier  last week by doing this. Also  watch for the hole in the carpet 
rubbing. best way to cut that hole in a new  carpet , is with a 1 inch socket on 
extension , heated with a torch. does  a  Quick neat job , and no loose 
threads. push and twist quickly after  heating it (not red hot) 
At the same time , you might want to do a good check on  all the  linkage 
in the rear for wear , and adjustment. Sometimes ( most of the  time!) the 
carb links to the cross shaft wear and have too much play to return  properly. 
Sometimes the holes in the cross shaft are worn .
The real  trick here is to use only as much a spring strength as  really 
needed to return. too much is an aggravation on longer trips.

Could  someone please explain where it should connect (somewhere on the 
front body  panel I presume) or maybe send a photo.  I remember reading 
somewhere  recently that the front spring should be stronger than the rear spring 
(on the  carb linkage).  Clarks lists a short and a long ("early '61"); can 
anyone  explain how to determine which one is correct on my '61 GB?
