The exhaust manifold studs do not need to be removed as long as you pack well around them to keep them from breaking through the shipping box. If the cylinder head temp sending unit was working you can leave it in. If you plan to replace it, take it out now just in case it snaps off, you can ask the head re-builder to extract it while they have it. At 48 years old it might be a good idea to replace it anyway.
  
 You are right on the "one is at compression and the other at exhaust" on Each Horizontally Opposed Cylinder Pair. 


Should I remove the exhaust manifold studs?  A couple came out on the head as I forgot to raise the flap on the lock washers before. What  about the cylinder head temp sending unit? Leave in or remove?Noticed that the piston in #1 cylinder seemed at TDC as #2 cylinder.   Guessing one is at compression and the other at exhaust(ion) and 3 & 4 and 5 & 6 pair up the same?

 With the engine the way it is now, and no Lift, it would make Reassembly So much easier to take the engine out of the car.

Check.Got it off today.  Amazing how much more smoothly things go with a little experience.Need to remove the choke thermostats before shipping.  Should I remove the exhaust manifold studs?
