[V8Vairs] Carburation

I've tuned several Edelbrocks (and Holleys for that matter) and their
calibration "out of the box" is ALWAYS about 10-steps rich. While this
makes for good power, it's not so hot for economy.

What I do is to install an Oxygen sensor bung in the exhaust and use an AFR
meter to tune for 15:1 at cruise and 13.5:1 under high loads. I also set
the power to come on at about 2" of manifold vacuum.

Edelbrock sells a tuning kit with a selection of rods and springs, Holley
sells a similar kit with a selection of jets and power valve springs. AFIR,
these kits are about $50. ; Each brand requires a little different tuning
sequence. I usually start with WOT. Edelbrocks are much easier to do
because of the easily changed metering rods.

The last one I did was a 1406 Edelbrock (625 CFM?) on a 327 Corvette. I took
the stock jet (.098") down to .095" and the stock rod (75x47) to 73x42

Is anyone running an Edelbrock Performer series carburator, or a GM
QuadraJet on a mildly tuned 350SBC? In the case of the Edelbrock, I'm
curious what size carb you use, the jet and metering rod combinations you
run and what sort of gas mileage you get? For the QuadraJet, which model do
you use, how did you set it up and what gas mileage do you get?

I'm considering a QuadraJet on the assumption that the small primaries
should provide a significant improvement in gas mileage over my Edelbrocks
(I am running a 600cfm and have run a 750cfm). I have a mild cam, Edelbrock
Performer intake manifold and headers on an otherwise stock 350 SBC. I
expected 20mpg and am getting well short of that, though it goes like stink!
