Thanks to Ken,Seth, Frank E., Rick, Neal, Thomas, Matthew, Chris, and Frank P. for taking the time to offer their thoughts regarding my inquiry.  If I make a change, I think I'll start with an aluminum damper and see how much difference it makes.
