Thanks to Bill Brafford, Tony U, Joe Potts and everyone else who has sent me
info about Charlie! I'm glad I asked the question, because for years I had
been wondering if it was only me that was mystified by them! As Bill says
here, the ads certainly work on the basis that we are all paying attention
(in fact he was probably the first vendor I noticed when I read the small
ads in the Communique, so it's got to be effective to publish 'offbeat' ads
if they get you noticed). In fact I have to admit to using the strategy
myself, for instance on my eBay auctions, but I do try to make myself a bit
more comprehensible!

However, I will also not that, despite having been reading the ads for
years, I have never bought anything from him. The reasons are twofold: a) I
don't understand the ads (although thanks to Tony U I now have a working
understanding of Charliespeak!); and b) he doesn't 'do' email, which is my
preferred way of buying things from the USA (easier and cheaper than phone
calls!).

Looks as if it's my loss...
