Randy,

I just changed my cable today and had the same difficulty you speak of
below.  However, I simply grabbed the cotter pin head with a small pair of
vice grips and pulled REALLY HARD and the cotter pin came right out.  There
is a washer underneath it... Pull it off.  Then lift up on the pulley and
slide the emergency cable out.  While it was a bit of a pain in the butt...
It wasn't that bad.  If I were you, I wouldn't pull anything else apart.
Once you get the cotter pin out it is a piece of cake.
