Amen to the person that suggested not dealing with a seller with no
feedback. It indeed looks like a nice car, but there are a lot of Ebay
scammers out there; even if he's a legit seller, it would be extremely
unwise for anyone to pursue that one. Yeah, a radio, a small part..
whatever, but a $15,000 Corvair? No way. Remember, "Caveat Emptor" always
applies, but if you're dealing with an established Ebayer with several
hundred feedbacks a 99% rating, it takes most of the edge off of that Latin
phrase...

Excellent question: Answer--the rear housing of a FC Powerglide contains
connection ports, and associated internal-automatic bypass valving, for the
connection to the OEM-supplied transmission oil cooler (car-type PGs do not
have
such provisions). GM (apparently) felt, due to the extra weight and heat
developed with the FC application, that a transmission oil cooler would be
necessary.
I can attest that my FC--even with the trains oil cooler-- before changing
to
an NOS torque converter, had a tendency to heat up the fluid, and blow
boiled
fluid out the vent at top of the axle. Car-type PGs can be converted to
accept
an external cooler; my 67 coupe is so equipped and works well. With the
conversion, one needs to drill the rear housing and add connection fitting;
blocking off an internal passage is, also, required. Complete instructions,
I
believe, appear in the Corsa Tech Guide.

Thanks to the great support of our group, I've happily installed replacement
cups on two accelerator pumps. It was so easy, I tried all the methods here
and also pried on on with a cotter pin puller. All the methods are good.
It's surprising how strong and stretchy the rubber really is. No problems at
all. Methods:
1. Using a tapered plastic tip from silicone sealer, cut to size. Moisten
or lubricate and slide on. Thanks to Dave Ziegler and Larry Forman!
2. Heat the parts, lube and push on. Thanks Ron Cruz!
3. Using a right angle dental pick, lube it and winkle it into place. Thanks
Harry Yarnell!

Subject: <VV> L/M convert. gear drive box

I am building/restoring the power top system to my 66 Corsa. At the bottom
of each leg of the top frame, there is an aluminum gear box that mounts to
the arms with 4 large screws. At the bottom of the gear box, there is a
"foot" where one of the screws goes. It seems that both "feet" are broken
off. Can I mount the gear box without them? Can I get them welded back in
place-and will that work? Do I need to get replacements? So far, everyone
I have talked to about power tops says that it is common for that "foot" to
be broken. It seems that it serves no other purpose that to help hold the
box in place, will three do the job. I will take all offers and advice.
Thanks

I can site a similar experience when I shipped a one pound parcel item from
Pennsylvania to Texas. I compared costs between UPS and USPS, for shipping
a watch with a high value. UPS wanted $125 for insurance and 2 day air
service, USPS was under $25 including insurance, registered mail, return
receipt and priority handling. This is the most extreme difference in
pricing for identical services that I have ever seen.

 (somewhat long)

I hadn't driven my '64 spyder in a while, so I got it out and took it
for a drive around the neighborhood. I noticed that the fast idle
didn't want to kick down for about 15 minutes of driving in 40-degree
weather driving at about 30-35 mph. Then the engine started smoking a
bit of black smoke and hesitating. I suspected a rich mixture and thus
a maladjusted choke. The temp gauge was reading somewhere between
250-350 ( I couldn't tell exactly because having the headlights on (and
thus the dash lights) caused a bit of condensation inside the glass of
the three small gauges. Anyway, I pulled over to adjust the choke when
I noticed the "piss hole" at the back of the fuel pump was going drip,
drip, drip. This explained the rich behavior because of all the excess
gas fumes being sucked into the air intake. So now I need a new pump.

Also, when I start the engine cold, the fast idle is around 1800 RPM
and I get a bit of black and/or blue smoke, probably have the choke set
too long and/or the fast idle is too high. Is there anyone out there
with a Clark's electric choke system on their turbo engine that can
give me an easy and surefire way to adjust the choke and fast idle
linkage properly?

If anyone is interested in the green '68 Monza coupe for sale on ebay, I
have gotten some answers to some basic questions.

The car has a 4spd tranny. The engine is original and the AIR system is
connected but they don't know anything about the exhaust - pipes going out
back instead of to sides. The original radio is an AM/FM, unknown
condition. There is an aftermarket CD player/radio in the glove box.

They do not want to give out the VIN, which would help confirm the year and
other info.

Starting bid's too rich for me, but it's a nice looking car.....

Subject: <VV> Advice needed on carb adjustment

Santa brought me two new (rebuild) carbs for my '65 110 hp Monza. Never
being
one to leave well enough alone, I disassembled the carbs to check settings
(I
also wanted to install 0.052 jets). When I put the first carb back
together,
I followed the procedure described by Larry Claypool in the Tech Guide (and
in
the shop manual) for adjusting the fast idle cam. The procedure calls for
a
0.078 in. gap between the idle speed screw and the throttle lever (with the
idle screw in 1&1/2 turns and the fast idle tang on the second highest step
of
the cam). My gap was somewhat less than 0.010 in. so I attempted to bend
the
throttle lever tang to increase the gap to 0.078 in. This resulted in a
quite
"distorted" tang that didn't appear to me to be normal. When I put the
second
carb together, I carefully measured the gap without any bending. It was
0.007
in. When I checked an old carb (with a normal-looking U-shaped tang), the
gap
was approx. 0.040 in. Have I missed something or should the tang really be
bent enough to increase the gap distance to 0.078 in.?

Recommendations are certainly welcomed.

Rick T
