Ken Hand's excellent post about adjusting valves is the best written full description of the process I've ever seen. This one should become the standard. For those who Still believe in hot adjustments... well... have at it. I'll stick with cold thank you very much. Rich B.

Bob has opened a Pandora's box here (or 'dora's box for some).

Since his abbreviated plea for eliminating abbrev.s hasn't drawn the sight
of the Net Nazi, yet, I will cite my own pet peeve (a small rascal) about
the incorrect citing of sightings when the site of the sighting is seldom
cited.

It's simple folks (and can be sighted in the appropriate tech manual).

When you see something, it can be quite a sight. But you wouldn't call it
a sight for saw eyes, rather a sight for sore eyes.

In a similar (jugular) vein, when you cite (or quote or refer to) you are
making a citation, not a sighting nor even a site-ing.

When you place the sighting at a given location, you've sited it. At that
site, and no other.

My '66 Convertible is sited in my Garage, and it can be sighted there if
you come to visit. And you can cite me on that.

Sorry if I seem to be *exsighted* about this.

Which studs are you talking about? Carb studs? Exhaust manifold studs?
Generally the hardware store variety of threaded rod is not all that strong.
Also, if memory serves me, the end that is in the head is oversized, so it'll
be a tight fit, something you're not going to get with all thread. SS is only
Grade 4, at best, and although stronger than the Grade 2 stuff at Home Despot,
it's still not up to the Grade 5 the OE used.
Doesn't Clark's or someone sell replacement studs for this?

can paint the exposed areas. Should the studs be set in loctite?

I should have been more descriptive when asking about studs for the 140 heads
I am working on. These are the studs for the exhaust manifolds, the carb
studs, any other studs protruding from the head itself.

Thanks for all the responses!

West Florida Corvair Club

Come on Down!
The West Florida Corvair Club is having their 21st Annual Corvair Lovers
Holiday and Cars show from February 13 thru 15th. The weather outside
might be frightful, but you will be warm and toasty inside a huge area
called the Holidome with a heated pool. Everything will kick off at 4:00
p.m. on Friday the 13th when Registration and Hospitality begins. There
will be indoor parts vendors hawking their wares, Every hour on the hour
we will draw for door prizes. All door prizes must be picked up before
the Awards Ceremony at 4:30 pm Saturday when any door prizes left
unclaimed will be given away again. In your registration package will be
two free door prize tickets and the first 50 who register will get a Dash
Plaque and a free Hot Wheels Vairy 8. You will also get a Goody Bag while
they last. At 5:30 pm there will be a Hospitality Dinner that is out of
this world. (Our club really knows how to put on a spread.) You will get
drinks, chips and cookies in the Hospitality Room until 9 pm. After
dinner there will be a Fan Belt Toss and we hope to have zip zap cars to
race on a track for all those young at heart. After all the activities
Friday night, you can go swimming in heated inside pool or enjoy the hot
tub until 10:00 pm. All the night owls can enjoy the Lounge until 1:00
am.
Saturday morning, February 14th, we will have doughnuts and coffee while
they last. This would be a good time to watch the sun come up and take a
walk along the beach before you start cleaning up your car for the Car
Display. If you prefer, take a walk in the late afternoon and watch the
sun go down, but bring a warm coat as it will be windy on the beach. We
will have leftovers, while they last, at 12:00 noon. You can enjoy more
drinks, chips and cookies until 9 pm in the Hospitality Room. At 9:00 am
Ed and Dan will hold a Tech Session in the Holidome and show you how to
lubricate Bearing Housings. At 10:30 am the ladies will get together and
be crafty! At 11:30 am the judges get to eat early so they can go to
their meeting at 12:00 noon and be ready to start judging cars at 12:30
pm. From 11:00 am until 3:00 pm will be our car display. After the
display at 3:00 pm we will have our 7th Annual Valve Cover Race. (We are
saddened that Miss Valve Cover will be unable to attend this year event.)
Our awards ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m.
At 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night we will have a buffet dinner for those who
registered for the Corvair Lovers Hotel Package. After dinner it is back
to the pool or hot tub and to the Lounge until 1:00 am. Sunday morning
there will be our excellent Sunday morning brunch and a bit of
socializing before everyone hits the road to go back home.
Whew! And we promise a relaxing weekend? Come on down!

Does this include cylinder head studs? I SURE as heck wouldn't be using
threaded rod for that. Come to think of it, I wouldn't use threaded rod
(generally pretty weak stuff) for ANY of it. Is there a reason why you
don't want to use the proper parts? If you are investing a lot of time (and
probably cash) doing head work, why cut such important corners?

Jusr curious...

i like to replace all tubing on any old car because you can not see the real

sits there acting just like a mini drill, rearing its ugly face only upon real

I found last summer that about the only place to get carb studs is from our vendors. They are fine thread on
one end and course on the other. The auto parts stores have studs like this but not any where near the proper
length. I have not replaced exhaust studs but I would expect them to be similar but of a length which would
be available.

Uh..oh, here we go again :o). Adjust them cold, just like it says in the
shop manual. A better way to explain it is to re post Ken Hands excellent
post on how Corvair valves should be adjusted.

Good luck,
Marc Sheridan

>From Ken Hand:
I will try to answer what you are saying/asking with my opinion. First a few
parameters, when I replace lifters I use SBC lifters with the disc valve,
when I adjust valves, even corvair original, I use 3/4 turn, and I adjust
one cyl. at a time at TDC.

My turn to ask a question; Why do you adjust valves hot and running? I think
the answer may lie in the OLD DAYS when you had to adjust mechanical valves
running and with a feeler gauge, I still have some of the tools. Also to let
everyone know I vary quite a bit from the shop manual when it come to
certain things -- see above 3/4 turn, and SBC lifters -- so to me the shop
manual is a guide not the Bible. Now for some specific reasons, hydraulic
lifters, wonderful things that let you take all the clearance out for quiet
movement and not have to be perfect or exactly on the money for best overall
performance. You can adjust SBC lifters on the corvair from as little as
1/16th of a turn or all the way to 1 1/2 turns and the lifter will still
perform the same way it was designed. You ask "why adjust cold"? Most of it
has been said before but I will reiterate some and add some new, maybe. The
list, ease of working conditions, cleanliness, open the engine up once, or
on a rebuild never, you don't have to destroy a part to make a shield you
won't burn yourself! (GRIN) The cold adjustment can be more precise and the
BIGGIE, it takes less time.

I have found over the years that people are to impatient for the running
method and won't or don't wait for things to settle properly. Here is an
example someone puts lifters in an engine, they preadjust, run the engine
