Folks,
Really important to take out oil gallery plugs when cleaning an old
block-or a new one...

The best way to clean is in a professional machine, but I have found even
that leaves sediment in voids, etc. Heat and solvent seem to work better
than just solvent to dislodge sludge where grit may be embedded. So, final
step is soapy hot water, followed by clean hot water and then cold water and
blow out with air. BTW, running a drill bit thru oil holes for crank and
cam not only makes sure there are no casting obstructions but also gets some
of the sludge, if any in those places.
