Take a small hose clamp. slide the clamp over the fingers of the cable.
tighten the clamp. The fingers will compress and you should be able to pull
it through the backing plate.  You might have to give it a yank, move the
clamp up further on the fingers, retighten and pull again...
There, that's got it.

Oh, btw, replace your wheel cylinder. Or rebuild the one you have. If it is
"a little damp", its gonna end up puking fluid all over your brake shoes.
Pay now, or pay later as they say.

Everyone is a newbie at first. Had V V been available in the mid 80's, I
would have found it one heck of a resource.
