OK, so I reread Warren's original email and it seems that there is only one
race car. Does anyone have any dates related to when Bill Thomas built the
car and Doug Roe bought it from him? In particular, I am wondering about
racing events and such. By the way, I think that this is my favorite
Corvair, one that has always inspired my interest in building hot rod Vairs
because it is such a stark and purposeful car - kinda like a Porsche 550
Spyder - and a car that has significant history.

Well Barry,

I can sympathize with you. I sent the heads off of my car to Ray Sedman
for deep valve seats, new springs, gasket step removal, and anything
else that needs fixing that my untrained eye can't see. I know when I
get them back, they'll be done right. But it is killing me to see these
nice sunny, warm southern days and not have my convertible to drive.

The big difference is the alternator and fan shroud. The horizontal setup
only uses the Porsche impeller. The vertical setup uses the entire Porsche
fan
shroud and alternator.

Hey Jim, It would seem to me that you may have discovered the reason
for the failure of both u-joints on the half-shaft. If the "tab" failure
was the
first thing to happen, then it is possible that end play, and centrifucal
force
could cause that end cap of the outboard u-joint to fail and cause the rest
of
your catastrophic half shaft failure. We now have 39 + years of wear and
tear
on our LM Corvairs and metal fatigue may be possible in any moving part.

I need a good pair of LM 110HP heads for a customer's engine. Will pay
reasonable price or swap a pair of 140 HP heads for yours and a few bucks.
As
always, I will also offer a pair of Premium Rebuild Carbs (or other carbs or
items)
in trade.
Thanks,

Today we pulled apart the 66 four speed from our Corsa. The history of
this box is unknown. It had sat in my fathers garage for 20 years when we
put it in the Corsa last year. It works great and shifts easlily and
smoothly but has had this grumbling sound in first since we put it in. We
were expecting to find worn needle bearings or one of the two big bearings
to be worn. They all looked good with no noticeable wear. So we put in
new needle bearings and a new countershaft just to be sure. So back
together it went. Question is what else could it be? Or is it just plain
noisy? Sound is audible whenever the tranny is shifted into first, clutch
in or out and only when the car is in motion. Only happens noticeably in
first.

Did you change the input shaft bearing? Ignore the fact that it might
"look OK"... it's notorious for being noisy in 1st, and not just Vair gear
boxes.

 One is correct, Mike Rubaner Customized the car and repainted it;

It's almost time to get those Vairs on the road again for some of you. Have
you looked at your rear motor mount lately? Sagging or just sheared off? I
was
tired of the sag too and tired of sending it off and waiting to have it
replaced. That's why I developed a replacement late model rear motor mount
to stop
the sag. If your in need or just interested let me know I can send a picture
for you to see the difference. My prototype has been in my daily driver
since
July 2001,with 41000 miles so far. The mount is $129.95 plus shipping and
uses
the original mounting hardware. It will work in AC cars too.

Thanks for your consideration.
Jeff Brekke
