I run name brand, non-wrapped,skinny, over the counter belts from any auto
parts store. I tend to vary between normal and SPIRITED driving and don't
have any problems. I typically get 40,000-60,000 miles on a belt and don't
have any problems with it tossing. When I owned my first corvair back in
the late 80's I did go through a problem throwing belts but it was all due
to pulley alignment, tension, steel fan and generator. If you run a steel
fan and generator, may a tensioner and guides would be necessary. Once I
figured out how to set them up, they have worked great. Not too tight, just
adjusted so that the alternator fan can be turned with one finger like many
have said. Make sure the pulleys are lined up. I currently run mag fans,
alternators and this combination as many have said, minimizes the loading on
the belt and thus reduces stretch. I don't run guides or spring tensioners,
not because I don't believe in them, but because I haven't found them
necessary for the way I drive.
