Years ago my father had a '71 jeep (Buick v6 GM starter) that did the same
thing, we found a cure. We had read somewhere that the solenoid spring was
not right for the application and when it would get hot the solenoid
wouldn't engage, we replaced it with the one in the article we read and had
no more problems.  I wish I could remember what the difference was in the
spring and or the part #.
