Doc,  I agree.  Whenever I have to get into an alternator I plan on replacing 
the bearings, brushes and checking the diodes with a tester.  I hate taking 
something apart twice within 5 years.

Hi Bob,

I have had one of these for years.  I think I bought it at Sears.  It works 
great if you know how to use it right.  I would caution that this may not be 
the best item to use on the alternator.  You hit the end of the wrench with a 
big hammer.  This gives the torque but also delivers significant axial impact.  
While this is fine for most bolts or nuts that are giving you problems, you do 
not want to do this to an alternator or generator bearing.  By the way, I 
have found that the best way to use one of these impact wrenches is to "pre-load" 
the wrench manually before you hit it.  In effect, turn the wrench in the 
proper direction while holding it and hitting it.  If you don't do this, it 
doesn't work very well at all.
