What you're talking about, I think, is the recommendations for Amsoil, which 
is synthetic.  The Army, as well as some other big fleets, have gone to 
periodic oil analysis.  Under this, you  NEVER change oil or filters until 
directed to by the results of the lab.  I have lots of experience with this 
during my time in the Army and once was told to change a perfectly 
functioning transmission in a M88 recovery vehicle based on the results of 
oil analysis.  Heard (on the list) that Walt Davidson uses oil analysis on 
his Ultravan.
