The only possible downside is that you will lose the shock absorbing affect  
of the rubber in the bushing. You may not need it, but your 40 year old 
steering  gear might. Shock loading into the steering box might increase wear on the 
piece  parts in the box, loosening up the steering eventually. - Seth  Emerson
