Not specifically Corvairs, but this does happen
regularly in Denver. Every August in Arvada, a Denver
suburb, oldies station KOOL 105 FM (Clear Channel
affiliate of Infinity Broadcasting) is heavily
involved in Hot Times, Cool Cars in August. Area
firefighters team up with the Good Guys Car Club and
put on a weekend show at the Arvada Center for the
Performing Arts.
KOOL 105 does a live remote all weekend and heavy
promotion on the air and web site leading up to the
event and one of the DJs, usually the very popular
Da Boogeyman, is MC for stage events like the awards
and giveaways. Also, the KOOL house band, the KOOL
Cats, plays long sets both days.
The key to getting this kind of involvement is that it
is a massive charity. The money goes to the burn unit
at Children's Hospital. Last year's show had 970 cars
(including one LM coupe from a Rocky Mt. CORSA member)
on display and the streets were blanketed in all
directions with perhaps 2000 more rods, restos and
customs driven in by spectators. The firefighters even
spend the year getting parts donations and building a
rod to raffle off, last year a 70 Chevelle and in '03
a bucket T. Add that to the vendor and show entry
fees, admission at $5 per head and other cash
donations, then subtract out any costs not covered by
donations and you have a huge donation to the
hospital.
Also consider the massive volunteeer effort involved.
Athough the show is later this month, I know some of
the volunteers are already deep into working on the
'06 show and will put many hundreds of hours into it.
I would say the hook is a huge event, big charity
benefit, big news, even in a big town. But KOOL does
remotes from several events around town that aren't as
big. I imagine if a Corvair club spearheaded a large
show with a charity benefactor, a station would get
involved. Also, cars here show at several community
summer celebrations where a car display is a small
part of the bigger event. The KOOL Yellow Submarines
(mobile broadcast van and camper) appear all over
town. As an example, KOOL broadcasted and the same
Corvair I mentioned before appeared the weekend of the
4th at an event billed as a massive family
celebration. The Vair was one of about 20 cars on
display.
Not a big car show, but definitely in the public
eye--with media support.
