I sent an e-mail to Pure Oil (Purolator) asking if this still

Padgett,
My mileage SUCKED when I used the Purolater "U" type seal fitted filter...
ended up with a slight leak, tightened the bolt down a little, and the metal
"lip" ended up going THROUGH the seal. I was only 1,500 miles on that filter...
changed the oil and filter and went to a WIX filter... NO MORE LEAKS.
I actually bought the car with that filter on it, and didn't realize the
change until I took it off... no more Purolater filters (OR Hastings, which appear
the same way) for my Corvairs... I'll either use the WIX or my PF4s I have...
Later,
Lonzo
