Be sure to check your thread sizes and drill sizes- The  Corvair Rochester 
jet threads are 1/4" x 28TPI  - If you drill out the  middle of the jet to 
anywhere near 5/16", the threads, indeed the whole  jet will have disappeared. 
Check the minor thread dimension of a 1/4" x 28  TPI thread and stop just short of 
that. The rest of the jet will kind of unwind  out of the carb at that point.
