I go to the local FLAPS lots with some rather strange requests. Sometimes I
go in with a part number and they ask me "what is that for?" My reply is
always "I don't know, I just need that part." Other times I know the "common" car
that that part is for and use that to get them to look up the part. Once had
a heater motor in hand. After I told them what car to look it up for and they
produced the part the guy asked what is it really for. He looked up Corvair
and found nothing. I explained the minor differences between the right part
and the one they were going to sell me. Retrained 4 guys with that little tech
 session.

A few of the part guys know me and just don't bother to ask me any
questions. I find that a little knowledge, courtesy, humor and patience can get me
just about anything I need from "behind the counter." Having the experience of
worked the other side back when they didn't have computers doesn't hurt.
