It's a 1943 zinc coated steel penny. World War II used copper and there wasn't enough for 1943 pennies, although a very few copper ones were struck. The ones we saw were all zinc coated steel. They were fun because they were different and would be attracted by magnets. Cheap fun for us kids. -ron 65,66
