Mike, your "fuse" analysis is exactly correct.  There is a bad connection
(usually corrosion) and a high ammerage draw (e.g., starter) "burns-out" the
connection and leaves it open.  When that happens, nothing works until you
wiggle the connector to re-establish another poor connection or clean it
properly.  Anytime you get this behavior (stuff works, high amperage draw
and nothing works, wiggle a connection and stuff works again) it's almost
certainly a bad connection somewhere in the path of the high amperage draw.
