For many years now, the SAE has had their engine test method/procedure
(J1349) in place that instructs engine manufacturers on how to accurately measure
net torque and horsepower on their engines. This is the procedure that got the
car manufacturers away from those outrageous horsepower claims during the 1960s
and back to something real. Following this procedure allows the engine/car
manufacturers to make realistic claims for their products.
But wait, something strange must be going on..............Are the car
manufacturers back to their old tricks, fudging their test results? One must wonder.
Or was it our dear FED that is forcing this?
That is because the SAE recently released a NEW test procedure (J2723). What
is new about this procedure is that it's the same old one, but with an SAE
qualified witness verifying that the old tests were run correctly and accurately.
So the SAE doesn't really trust the car manufacturers to run these engine
tests! There must now be a third party witness. How about that?
It turns out that Chevrolet was the first car company to implement this new
procedure with the running of the Corvette Z06 engine tests which produced 505
hp @ 6300 rpm. Other car manufacturers to follow.
