Around 1970 when Penske and Donahue were racing the Javelin, the front tires
on the required 8" rims were too narrow for the front weight of the car.
Goodyear was contacted and tires were made for 8" rims with over 10" of tread
width. In order for this to work, the side wall was so stiff that it was
virtually an extension of the rim.
The tire was nearly impossible to mount.
Soon every class was using cantilever tires and restricted rims widths became
something of a joke.
This was the 70's and Michelin can't make a stiff tire today.
