I've just picked up what looks to be an early 3;27 ring/pinion/carrier,apart
but looks all there..no case,tho...is it possible to put the nuts for late
yokes in and swap it in a late case? Would i have to put the pinion gear on the
late pinion shaft? There was also 1 'washer',probably a shim, that looks like
it may be pinion-to-bearing,will measure it later..Tom

Tom,
You cannot use the early carrier in a late application. There is more to the
late carrier than just the late yoke nuts. The length of the carrier bearing
shafts are longer to support the axle shafts to prevent wobble and carry the
shafts properly. You can install the early ring gear on the late carrier if
you get the ring gear drilled and taped to match the 9 bolt pattern. That's
really the only difference between the early and late ring and pinion gear sets.
The washer you mentioned is probably the spacer shim for the pinion gear.
It may or may not be the proper one for your application. You will need to
follow the shop manual to set up the correct gear pattern by using the proper
thickness shim washer.
