i usually do not replace lifters unless the bottom surface shows abnormal
wear. i try to keep lifters on the lobe they came with if at all possible. when
i take motors apart for salvagwe i keep the cam and lifters on a special board
i make. i drill holes in it for the lifters on both sides then set the cam
in between the rows of lifters. i use a piece of 2 x 6. i have 2 or 3 sets here
most of the time. i then wrap them in saran wrap with oil in the lifters. if
the lifters are varnished up i clean them in carb cleaner and check them one
by one for wear. i go to all of this effort because i find the old original
lifters adjust nicer than most replacements. so far it has worked out well for
me for a lot of years. i use a forsner drill to get a nice flat bottom hole
for the lifters.
