Easy - it is too expensive to build and the price tag is way too high.
Smarts don't sell too good in Europe. There are also other "cult cars"
like Renault Twingo which sell much better (and have room for a children
seat in the back).
For the same money you get also a nice 5-seater Fiat or nearly a VW Polo
which is much more car for the money, and they - as most other modern small
cars offered around here - have similar good "mileage".
The Smart automatic tranny also has an annoying switch-over phase which
impedes spirited driving :-}
