Bob,
I more wrote the question to get people thinking!  If just a MC replacement then bench bleed, install, and crack lines after MC to get air out of line.  I knew Ryan replaced lines as well so pull a vacuum on whole system and away you go.  Not sure if this would be a good idea on newer brake systems but that doesn't apply here.
Now for the hand pump... seems I have an old fuel pump laying around.  Those are good for pumping fluid so....

I did this on my last COMPLETE rebuild on the blue '68 using a hand vacuum 
pump.  As has been pointed out by others there would be some leakage at the 
seals (I guess depending on the vacuum level) but it worked like a charm for 
me--and no spongy pedal.
