<VV> Tire Pressure (Kinda Corvair content)

This is a general question regarding tire pressure and
it may be a simple or stupid one but I'm curious.  

If I put larger or for that matter even smaller tires
on my car how do I determine the tire pressure I
should run?  I know on a vair the front should have
less pressure than the back but how much is enough, if
say all 4 tires have a maximum of 44 PSI?  On a new
car if I beef up the tires what do i do to detemine
the correct pressure?
