If memory serves me right, I don't think that the designers indended
that the backlight end up attached to the top of the rear cowl vent
panel. There are spacer blocks that are placed on the bottom edge to
keep the glass shimmed up and in proper location. It's just by accident
that during factory assembly, the sealing strip often got put low and
ended up on the cowl panel.

When I did a pavement-up on my '69 coupe a dozen years ago, I set the
backlight and cowl panel so that the cowl panel can be removed without
disturbing the glass or its sealant. Works like a charm.

Personally, I wish the windshield and its cowl panel had been designed
that same way.
