I was going through the same ordeal one afternoon , when a friend of mine stopped by . 
He was a Ford dealership mechanic . 
Saw what I was doing and told old me I was an idiot and wasting valuable time and proceeded to show me " their way " of shock removal . 
Given the room , you  take a deep socket  the size for the nut , attach this to a very long extension .
Put this on and bend the shaft back and forth until it snaps off below the nut .
