Check for mud daubers and/or their nests in the fuel line. You may have  
stumbled on a new breed that can live in gasoline.
 
Seriously, there may be some stuff in the gas tank that's clogging the  
sock/pickup. It could be acting like an intermittent problem if the stuff falls  
off and is then picked up again.
