The symptoms you describe are typical of a bad starter drive, or possibly a
broken drive end housing.  Extreme wear on the starter drive lever could
also cause the problem.  In any case, you'll have to remove the starter and
a do a visual on it.  If the nose is not cracked, then replace the starter
drive.  It's not that difficult.
