Yeabut the backside also has the "branded" serial number and FMVSS stamps 
so is not as "clean" as the front. BTW back in the day tires had a second 
layer of white rubber under the black. Shops used to be able to turn a 
blackwall into a whitewall by slicing off a strip of rubber (why whitewalls 
are typically sunk into the tire a bit). If you have a local 
retreader/recapper they should know if and which still do.
