Just on top of the switch is a wire ring in a notch in the shaft. This ring  
can be very difficult to see when every thing is in the normal position. As 
Matt  and Marc have mentioned, if you pull the shaft up, you'll get better 
access to  the ring. The shaft will only move about half an inch. Careful 
manipulation of a  couple small screwdrivers or picks should get the ring out of the 
groove. Once  the ring is removed the switch cat slide up the shaft.
