Ah yes, the miracles of modern technology. I've railed against
them as much as anybody, but then here we are.

Without the internet this news would be much harder to get out. Without
modern technology I would have been dead 21 years ago of kidney failure.

With regret I have to make the following post -
After 32 years of owning Corvair Underground I must offer it for
sale - PLEASE read this entire message carefully, as I don't want any
misunderstandings!

A few weeks ago I was told to visit a heart surgeon, by my heart
specialist. Linda and I just got back this evening from our appointment
and here's the situation. Very shortly I will need heart valve
replacement and replacement of much of my main aorta. This is major
surgery that will lay me up for at least 2 months. I'm apparently in a
somewhat risky situation right now and I've been asked to reduce my stress.

Yes, others can run this business without me. And I also intend to
continue working here full time until the operation (in 2-3 weeks). But
the time has come for a change. The day to day operations of a business
of this kind has been deemed too stressful for me and, after my
operation I need to take a new direction in life. I owe it to myself and
most of all to Linda.

I am a seriously motivated seller at this point. Our entire retirement
is wrapped up in this business. A younger, healthier person at the helm
could keep this operation going and still get quite a bit out of it.
Although things have been radically changing in this market I have every
reason to believe that there is a future for the Corvair parts business.
I think there is a real opportunity here.

What if we don't find a buyer? Then we will carry on. PLEASE do not take
this as some sort of sign that we are ready to close. Because that is
NOT the case. If we DO NOT find a buyer, in fact, keeping this business
going strong and healthy will be even more important to us. In fact, we
may have to temporarily close the next 2 Wednesdays just to pull
everyone off the phones to process orders and shop work that we are
behind on! I picked Wednesdays because those are our worst days of the
week for people calling primarily for free tech advice on stuff they
bought off the internet or elsewhere. I need to free those phone people
up to do something productive.

Business here is as usual and if you have orders in process they will be
completed and shipped with as much haste as we can muster. YES we will
continue to take your orders (We can use them more than ever) and, in my
absence (and in the hopefully unlikely case we don't find a buyer)
Curtis Grainger, whom many of you have talked to and met at Portland and
on the phone, will be in charge here.

Will I give up Corvairs - Heck no. I intend to stay on the board and
continue enjoying conventions. Oh yeah, because of the operation
scheduled and the recuperation involved I will NOT make it to Buffalo
(Almost bought the airline ticket today). That's a real bummer to me. I
will be very sad not see all my friends this summer. I knew the National
this year would be a radical departure for me - but not like this. But
such is life and I plan on hanging around a lot longer anyway.
