Yes, throw another solenoid on when the old one was off. If the problem 
dissapears, it was a faulty solenoid. If not, then you need to read the 
voltage on the solenoid terminals while it is cranking incorrectly. This 
is a lot trickier to do, so parts swapping is a preferred method of 
initial trouble shooting this situation.

Also, it was a sticking solenoid for me! (1956 Buick 30 years ago)
