The procedure works well. The problem is the timing.
I don't believe clutch cables break at the top of third gear on an entrance ramp. Mine went at the back end of a first date with an extremely hot, and judging by her house in an upscale neighborhood, somewhat rich young lady buried in a neighborhood with stop signs every 12 feet.
Anti Christine lived up to her reputation for doing the most annoying thing at exactly the wrong moment. I flogged her into getting us back to my date's place and later home with no apparent damage to the starter. All the damage was in the relationship, which ended about the time her hand hit the doorknob.

The starter is suprisingly robust and Padgett's advice for shifting
clutchless works well--with practive you can do it with only the wirring/binding noise
of the synchros working really hard.
