No, dimmer switches are still $6 at Flaps and used by millions of cars. All 
you really need is a short piece of #14 wire and two male spade lugs. Or, 
in a pinch, a paper clip and some electrical tape to have low beams 
temporarily.

Jumpers are handy for a lot of things besides bypassing the dimmer switch 
such as turning on an alternator when the regulator fails. Like any other 
emergency manoever it is good to know what the consequences are such as 
overvoltage with an unregulated alternator - to mitigate turn on heater fan 
and headlights.

But still can fix many things at the side of the road with just a roll of 
wire and some tape.
